The Pyrenees is like our home: For over 15 years, we run The Pyrenees Cycling Tours

The Central-Pyrenees Cycling Tour

Central-Pyrenees Cycling Tour is for the connoisseurs of road cycling. If you would like to spend one-week cycling in the Pyrenees including the big names like Tourmalet and Aubisque, as well as some unknown gems on the beautiful Spanish side of the Pyrenees, this is the tour for you.

Famous Tour de France Climbs

Tourmalet and  Aubisque—these two legends of cycling are highlights of this tour. Every cyclist should come to climb these mountains at least once. However, at least as impressive are the largely unknown Spanish Pyrenees—truly beautiful roads with little to no traffic. To see what we mean, have a look at the video at the very top of this page.
This Central-Pyrenees Cycling Tour combine the very best of the Pyrenees into a one week tour.

Tour Itinerary

The Pyrenees

The mountain range extends about 500km/310mi from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean (West to East). About 1/3 of the Pyrenees are in France and 2/3 in Spain. The northern part is generally steeper and this is where most of the famous Tour-de-France cols are located. On the southern Spanish side, the slopes are generally milder and there is even less traffic.

Itinerary: Central-Pyrenees Cycling Tour 2020

Starting location is Taüll, Vall de Boí in Spain. About 280km/175mi drive from Barcelona this is the most southeastern point of the Central-Pyrenees Cycling Tour. The remarkable Boí valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with nine Romanesque churches from the 9th and 10th century.

For the first two stages we cycle the southern slopes of the Pyrenees in a westerly direction. Being less steep, these roads are ideal for the first few days. We reach the magnificent medieval town of Aínsa where we stay for the third night. Form here we head north towards the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park—one of the most beautiful parks in Europe.

Destinations:

Day 1: Graus, Huesca Province, Spain

Day 2: Aínsa, Huesca Province, Spain

Day 3: Biescas, Huesca Province, Spain

Then we have a rest day in the picturesque small town of Biescas where we stay in the four star hotel Tierra de Beiscas. Here you can spend the rest day in the garden at the pool or strolling the town. In the afternoon we will go for an excursion into the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park where a local geologist will explain the origins of the Pyrenees mountain range.

Destination:

Day 4: Biescas, Huesca Province, Spain

After the rest day we cross the border into France and climb our first Tour de France classic: The Col du Aubisque. This is our personal favorite. We will stay overnight in Argelès-Gazost at the Auberge des Pyrénées where Stehane will prepare a superb French dinner for us. We will need the energy for the next day: The time has come to climb the Tourmalet. This is an unforgettable challenge for every cyclists. We have one more classic to climb berfore we reach the next hotel: the Col d’Aspin. Fortunatly it’s slopes are much more gentle than the Tourmale. This stage ends in Arreau where we stay in the Hotel Angletere, another one of our favorite hotels in the french Pyrneees.

Destinations:

Day 5: Argelès-Gazost, Hautes-Pyrénées department, France

Day 6: Arreau, Hautes-Pyrénées department, France

The final stage has another challenging program: The classic Col de Peyresourde and the steep Col du Portillon. We return to Spain where we stay in the ski resort of Vielha for the final night. The circle is almost complete: Vielha, just 20km north of our starting point in Vall de Boí. The tour ends with a final dinner.

Destination:

Day 7: Vielha, Catalonia Community, Spain

On Sunday August 2, 2020 we will bring you back to Barcelona or Girona airport. For those of you who come by car, we offer a transfer back to Vall de Boí  where you can park your car for the duration of the tour.

Information in the itinerary is subject to change. Depending on conditions the exact route and length of stages and transfers may need to change.

It is up to you whether you want to cycle in a group or at your own pace. If you are bringing your own GPS, we will transfer the tracks to your device at the beginning of the tour.

One of our support cars is always nearby – en route we stay close by and we await you with snacks and drinks at the important cols. As necessary, we also offer the possibility to ride parts of the stage in the support car. All tours are scheduled so that you can expect excellent weather. Should it unexpectedly happen that you cannot cycle, we will transfer you to the next hotel.

Our support car is equipped with a comprehensive first-aid-kit. For immediate response we carry standard equipment, oxygen and a heart defibrillator.

The Adventurers behind Aliveness Cycling

16 years in organizing Pyrenees Cycling Tours

We are deeply connected to cycling in the region of Girona. Dirk came here by bike for the first time in 1988 and immedialty fell in love with the perfect cycling conditions. As often as possible, he would try to come back for cycling, before moving to the region in 2003 and starting Canigou Cycling.

Canigou Cycling always prioritized the recreational and travelers perspective on cycling. At the time famous cyclist like Lance Armstrong, Tyler Hamilton and George Hincapie were living in Girona. One thing was clear for Dirk from day one: Canigou Cycling will not offer tours to cyclists who are only looking to be close to the Pro-Cyclists here. Our tours prioritize what really matters to passionate hobby cyclsist: great roads, authentic hotels and a friendly, heartfelt experience.

Of course we foster good connections with the pro-community in Girona. For instance  Canigou Cycling organized launch events for Cervélo in Girona. Dirk also works as Associate Professor for Innovation in Tourism at the University of Girona.
