TransPyrenees 2020

Fully Supported Pyrenees Cycling Tour
from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean

2 weeks, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean

TransPyrenees 2020

From the Atlantic to the Mediterranean in two weeks—From the Basque country in the west all the way to Catalonia in the east. We cross the French/Spanish border eight times and get to know all sides of the Pyrenees.

The idea is simple:  If you are a connoisseurs of cycling on beautiful backroads and wish to go beyond just ticking off famous col names, our TransPyrenees is the tour for you. Will you climb the Tourmalet and the Aubisque? Of course! And, even better, your experience of the Pyrenees will not be limtied to just the famous places where everybody is cycling. On this tour you cycle on the very best roads from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Have a look at the video slide at the top of this page to see what we are talking about.

The Aliveness Cycling TransPyrenees cycling tour is the continuation of the same tour that we offered for 15 years as Canigou Cycling. It is well tried and tested—based on our passion for finding the fun roads for you to cycle on.

If you only have one week, we recommend you to check out our Central-Pyrenees Tour.

The shortest route from coast to coast that also includes the classic cols such as Tourmalet and Aubisque is about 770km/480mi long. While for very strong cyclists this distance is manageable in one week, to accomplish this one must cycle seven days in a row along a predetermined route confined to the French side and frequented by many tourists. Any deviation—for a fantastic stretch of road or a better hotel—will make the route too long. In our opinion, this is not the way to experience the beauty of the Pyrenees. Therefore, if you have only one week, we recommend our spectacular Central-Pyrenees tour.

On dream roads from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean

TransPyrenees | Tour Itinerary

The Pyrenees

The Pyrenees extend about 500km/310mi from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean (West to East). About 1/3 of the Pyrenees are in France and 2/3 in Spain. The northern part is generally steeper and this is where most of the famous Tour-de-France cols are located. On the southern Spanish side, the slopes are generally milder and there is even less traffic.

Itinerary 2020

We offer two options for the arrival: Arrive at the Mediterranean (5 September) or arrive at the Atlantik (6 September).

Choose arrival Mediterranean if you prefer flying in and out via the same destination, either Barcelona (BCN) or Girona (GRO). An added bonus of this potion is that you will spend the first evening in the old town of Girona where so many pro cyclists live and train. The following day we will travel with several cars from Girona to Irun at the Atlantik. Driving time is about 7 hours.

We offer airport transfers for both options.

We offer two options for the arrival: Arrive at the Mediterranean (5 September) or arrive at the Atlantic (6 September).

Choose arrival Atlantic if you don’t mind flying into one airport, Biarritz (BIQ) or Bilbao (BIO),  and departing from another, Barcelona (BCN) or Girona (GRO).

We offer airport transfers for both options.

The opening get together will be 5 pm in the Hotel Alcazar in Irun. There will be time to set up the bikes.

For the evening we have a very special program: We will go to the beautiful town Hondarribia, just 10 min drive awway. This medieval town is located on the Atlantik coast with beautiful views accross the bay into France. We are here to get a taste of the Atlantik: No better place than the restaurant La Hermandad de Pescadors, the Brotherhood of fishermen, wich has supported widows of fishermenfor over 80 years.

Destination: Irun, Gipuzkoa Province, Spain

Stages 1 and 2 take us through the Basque country. The first stage is relatively easy going and begins with a spectacular road along the Atlantic coast. We stay overnight in France close to Saint-Jean-Pied-De-Port, one of the main starting points of the Camino de Santiago. Stage two is the shortest, yet arguably toughest stage of the tour. Of 30km of climbing on todays stage, half have an average gradient between 8% and 11%. There are short bursts of up to 17%. A beautiful 20km decent into Spain leads us to Isaba, a typical basque village for our well deserved first rest day. We will be staying in the typical basque hotel Lola, which is famous in the valley for this is where the locals come to enjoy a good dinner.

Day 1/Stage 1: Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, France

Day 2/Stage 2& Day 3/Rest Day 1: Isaba, Navarre Province, Spain

Stages 3 and 4 bring us back into France and across the most famous climbs of the Pyrenees, the Col d’Aubisque and the Col du Tourmalet. Average gradients stay around 8% and peak shortly at 10% at the top of the Tourmalet. We will spend the second rest day in Arreau where we will be staying at the Hotel Angleterre.

Day 4/Stage 3: Argelès-Gazost, Hautes-Pyrénées department, France

Day5/Stage 4 & Day6/Rest Day 2: Arreau, Hautes-Pyrénées department, France

After our second rest day we cycle back into Spain and along some of the most beautiful roads we know. Have a look at the video at the top of this page to see just how beautiful these roads are. On stage 5 average gradients stay under 8% except for 3km with 9%. On stages 6 and 7 average gradients always remain well under 7%. We stay in the medieval town of Solosona for our third rest day. Our hotel, La Freixera, is one of our favorites in the Pyrenees. Solsona was an important and rich commercial center and acted as a agteway for many products from the Pyrenees to Barcelona with it’s textile production and harbour.  Here you sometimes get the feeling that  you can already sense the Mediterranean influence. However, we have three more stages to go and head back north and back into France.

Day 7/Stage 5: Vielha, Catalonia Community, Spain

Day 8/Stage 6: Cellers, Lleida Province, Spain

Day 9/Stage 7 & Rest Day 3:  Solsona, Lleida Province, Spain

Stage 8 takes us to Castellar de n’Hug in Spain and on stage 9 we return into France close to the Canigou mountain. We stay in Céret, a picturesque French town known for it’s excellent Art museum where you can see paintings by Picasso, Chagall and Matisse. For the last stage of the Trans-Pyrenees, we cycle along the most eastern stretches of the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean. After what you will have already accomplished by now, cycling these final three stages will be a breeze. A dinner at the harbour of Port de la Selva concludes the tour.

Day 10 / Stage 8: Castellar de n’Hug, Barcelona Province, Spain

Day 11/Stage 9: Céret, Pyrénées-Orientales department, France

Day 12/Stage 10: Port de la Selva, Girona Province, Spain

On Sunday September 20, 2020 we will bring you to Barcelona or Girona airport. For those of you who come by car, we offer a transfer back to Girona where you can park your car for the duration of the tour.

Information in the itinerary is subject to change. Depending on conditions the exact route and length of stages and transfers may need to change.

About Us

Fangye and Dirk Aliveness Cycling
Fangye & Dirk in Southern Bolivia
The Adventurers behind Aliveness Cycling

16 years in organizing Road Bike Tours in Girona

We are deeply connected to cycling in the region of Girona. Dirk came here by bike for the first time in 1988 and immedialty fell in love with the perfect cycling conditions. As often as possible, he would try to come back for cycling, before moving to the region in 2003 and starting Canigou Cycling.

Canigou Cycling always prioritized the recreational and travelers perspective on cycling. At the time famous cyclist like Lance Armstrong, Tyler Hamilton and George Hincapie were living in Girona. One thing was clear for Dirk from day one: Canigou Cycling will not offer tours to cyclists who are only looking to be close to the Pro-Cyclists here. Our tours prioritize what really matters to passionate hobby cyclsist: great roads, authentic hotels and a friendly, heartfelt experience.

Of course we foster good connections with the pro-community in Girona. For instance  Canigou Cycling organized launch events for Cervélo in Girona. Dirk also works as Associate Professor for Innovation in Tourism at the University of Girona.
